On June 18, 2015, Beth Cranmer-Smith was the guest speaker at the Parkinson’s Support Group of Newmarket. This group meets the Trinity United Church. Beth spoke about speech and swallowing problems associated with Parkinson’s Disease and how Speech-Language Pathologists can help.
Did you know that 1 in 100 people will develop Parkinson’s? Of those, 60-90% will experience difficulty with speech and at least 50% will experience difficulty with swallowing.
Beth shared the latest research in the area of Respiratory Muscle Strength Training which can improve the effectiveness of coughing and also the speed and strength of swallowing. All members had the opportunity to try some of the respiratory muscle strength training exercises.
